Ooo la la!...Velvet

I was given this amazing long black velvet dress with flowery printed burnout sleeves by my aunt. I tried it on subconciously thinking it was going to look horrid on my figure but, suprisingly it wasn't too shabby and I loved it! I am thinking about altering it and making it shorter. What do you think I should do?
